DRAWN TO THE DARK:

DARK THEMES IN FAIRY TALES

With

Mara-Lea Rosenbarger, Jungian Analyst

" There are certain dark powers in the inner world that one really can only run away from,

or keep at a distance in some other way."  Marie-Louise von Franz

Why are we so fascinated by fairy tales which tell us about the darkness?  We find examples even in popular culture, including the stories of Harry Potter and the musical, Sweeney Todd. Ursula LeGuin suggests we spend our time with dark tales because, "The imagination can transfigure the dark matter of life."

In this workshop, we will review Jung's concepts of the personal and collective shadow, as well as the idea of archetypes.  We will consider Carl Jung's and Marie-Louise von Franz's ideas about honoring the mythical or symbolic realm - traditionally the place where individuals encounter "transfiguration."

We will put these ideas into everyday language that we can use in our lives.  To do so, we will discuss one dark fairy tale in depth. We will conclude with reflections on how we can deeply engage with these tales so that in spite of their grimness, they may also serve life.
